In this sobering drama, Meg Ryan proves no more adept portraying a drunk than she was playing an action heroine in 1996's Courage under Fire. As a wife and mother attempting to face life without the consolation of a bottle, she's guilty of trying too hard to convince. Andy Garcia is hardly more impressive as her insensitive husband, while Ellen Burstyn is wasted in a brief appearance as Ryan's mother. There's nothing about these people to make you care what happens to them, and ultimately the film drowns in its own good intentions.
