Cillian Murphy takes on a lighter than usual role in this madcap thriller, playing Michael, a chancer on the run from Dublin gangsters. Brendan Gleeson hams it up as the titular kingpin who puts a price on Michael's head after he fails to pay his debts and is implicated in the murder of a henchman. In fact it's Michael's neurotic neighbour (a well-measured performance by Jodie Whittaker) who did the deed and she keeps him company on the getaway, along with Michael's errant father (a batty Jim Broadbent). Their dysfunctional relationships provide the most intrigue here, though director Ian FitzGibbon knows how to up the stakes with plenty of action. Ultimately, this doesn't have the emotional resonance of the similarly-themed caper In Bruges, but it does keep you smiling.
