Director Wayne Wang explores his softer side in this sweet and wholesome comedy drama. Based on the US bestseller by Kate DiCamillo, it's a homespun, family fairy tale brimming with old-fashioned values and warmth. AnnaSophia Robb (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) is delightful as a kind-hearted ten-year-old, who moves to a small Florida town with her single parent father and preacher, Jeff Daniels. Lonely and struggling to fit in, she adopts a stray dog that she names after the local supermarket where he was found. The leisurely adventures that follow have a whimsical, almost magical feel as girl and pooch inadvertently bring together the eclectic community. Yet for all the film's charm, it won't appeal to everyone, with older children likely to find its simplicity and traditionalism a bit too twee.
