A young mother's grief over the death of her baby threatens to derail her marriage in this sober drama from director Don Roos. It's the sort of subject tackled in average TV movies but this New York-set tale is spared from outright ordinariness by Natalie Portman's lead performance as the distraught wife Emilia. Burdened with guilt and her own family issues, Emilia struggles to bond with her highly strung stepson (Charlie Tahan) while fending off her husband's icy ex-wife (Lisa Kudrow, in a thankless role). The film has its moving moments, but some wit wouldn't have gone amiss to leaven the increasingly oppressive melodrama. After all, this is the director who gave Christina Ricci her breakout adult role in the darkly funny The Opposite of Sex back in 1998.
