A little Gallic charm goes a long way in this engaging romantic comedy. The set-up is a tad contrived, but star Romain Duris remains utterly sincere as double-dealing ladies' man Alex, who makes a living breaking up toxic relationships. A solemn-faced Vanessa Paradis plays his latest target, Juliette, who is engaged to an English philanthropist (The Walking Dead's Andrew Lincoln). Her fiancé's earnestness has killed her appetite for fun, however, so Alex embarks on a mission to make Juliette smile again - and finds himself falling for her in the process. What makes this so satisfying is that for every glamorous location and scene of wild abandon (including a joyful send-up of Dirty Dancing), there is a moment of real tenderness and vulnerability from the seemingly cocksure hero that is truly seductive. Duris brings as much gusto to his role here as he did to his award-winning turn in 2005 drama The Beat That My Heart Skipped, and proves he is certainly an actor to watch.
