Our Score
Hanna-Barbera cartoon character Yogi Bear ("smarter than the average bear") is dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century with this uncomfortable blend of live-action, CGI and 3D. Set in Yogi's old stomping ground of Jellystone Park, the film uses a plot about corrupt politicians causing an environmental threat to Yogi's beloved nature reserve to kick-start a mix of predictable slapstick and lame jokes. The voice talents of Dan Aykroyd as Yogi and Justin Timberlake as Boo Boo are lost amid the frenetic action, and a lack of warmth and charisma in the live performances (Tom Cavanagh as Ranger Smith and Anna Faris as his documentary-maker love interest) scuppers any charm the film might have had for adults. There is one impressive white-water rafting ride down the river, but the rest will only appeal to youngsters who haven't seen it quite so many times before. If the writers had produced something that was smarter than the average script, then perhaps we would have been in business.
