Q Planes

Q Planes

Tim Whelan (1939)

U Certificate

Our Score
Laurence Olivier (as a test pilot) and Ralph Richardson (as a Scotland Yard officer) all-too-obviously enjoy their casting together in this terrific Irving Asher/Alexander Korda produced espionage romp. Richardson is especially good value as the policeman trying to discover just how planes are disappearing off the coast of Cornwall and it's rare to find intended lightheartedness working so well in a British film of the period. Much credit should go to the imported American director Tim Whelan, who keeps up the pace impressively. In America, this pre-war film was presciently entitled Clouds over Europe and helped pave the way for the success of Olivier's next two movies, Wuthering Heights and Rebecca.

An eccentric Scotland Yard officer is sent to investigate the mysterious disappearance of military test planes, thought to be the work of devious foreign spies. Comedy thriller, with Ralph Richardson, Laurence Olivier and Valerie Hobson.
