Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

The stories of great writers seldom make great cinema, and Genius is no exception - partly since it also seeks to tell the story of one of literature's greatest editors. Played by Colin Firth, Max Perkins is a mild-mannered family man whose red pen has sharpened the prose of Ernest Hemingway and F Scott Fitzgerald. Into his orbit comes the most unruly and potentially most talented of the lot: Thomas Wolfe (Jude Law), whose freeform debut novel, Look Homeward, Angel, arrives by the cartload, forcing the two men into a long and tight-knit working relationship that tests Perkins's patience as well as his marriage. Law and Firth spark well as odd-duck buddies, and theatre director Michael Grandage brings a light musicality that offsets the drudgery of, essentially, a man writing a book. But really there isn't a whole movie here, as is underscored when Nicole Kidman arrives, making a bizarre and thankless cameo as Wolfe's disturbed mistress.
