Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Patience, understanding and forgiveness are the simple yet valuable messages in this TV movie about an unhappy 11-year-old (Nicholas Stargel) who discovers his new suburban home is haunted by a previous owner (Martin Mull). Initially, the curmudgeonly spook wants to reclaim his house, resulting in family-friendly supernatural mischief and an overload of creepy music. But, of course, it's not long before boy and ghost have become pals, with the pair helping each other face personal truths and solve their emotional and physical problems. Though events are slight and full of inconsistencies, the film's overriding warmth and the nicely handled relationship between Stargel and Mull mean it's a pleasant watch. The gently manipulative ending is particularly sweet and moving, and there's a charming supporting performance from Rhea Perlman as the town's sage historian.
