A missed opportunity in every respect, director Paul Feig's reboot of the beloved 1984 comedy horror is a mess of misfiring humour, noisy thrills, bloated action, chaotic CGI and zero charm. This gender-reversed update sets itself too many nostalgic hurdles and fails to clear any as Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig (who both previously worked with Feig on
) along with Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones become the overly zany spook exterminators who must stop a crazed hotel janitor unleashing spectral mayhem on Manhattan. With a scattershot story barely hanging together and zipping from one frantic ghoulish escapade to the next, the four comediennes fail to cohere as a believable unit and barely sustain even the most obvious comic clichés without falling back on their own signature schtick. The finale set in a Times Square shifted to the 1970s is just one of the hard to understand concepts utilised to desperately keep it apart from the revered original.
When a series of supernatural disturbances occur in New York city, a quartet of investigators and their dim assistant investigate. Reboot of the 1980s comedy franchise, starring Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Chris Hemsworth.
