Review

Our Score
It's hard to find the words to express just how abysmal this reworking of The Servant really is. Based on Alexander Thynne's psychological shocker The Carry-Cot, it is directed with revolting enthusiasm by Andrew Sinclair, who, unsurprisingly, has not been entrusted with many features since. As the vicious butler intent on destabilising his weak-kneed aristocratic employer (Derek Jacobi), Oliver Reed gesticulates and rolls his eyes in a manner more befitting villainous Eric Campbell in a Charlie Chaplin short than a figure of menace in a supposedly literate tale of manipulation and witchcraft. So dire, it's not even a curio.

Summary

The butler at a country house leads a double life as the leader of a satanic cult. He forms an alliance with the household's German governess, and together they plot to take control of the estate's weak-willed aristocratic owner. Horror, starring Oliver Reed and Derek Jacobi.
