Our Score
Movies inspired by computer games always seem to be more about merchandising than art and this big-screen adaptation of the ground-breaking shoot-'em-up does little to dispel that view. For non-game fans, this is essentially an Aliens knock-off, with tough-talking Sarge (The Rock) leading an elite marine outfit to Mars to find out what has happened to a group of scientists working on an anthropological dig. The nominal lead is brooding Kiwi star Karl Urban (The Bourne Supremacy), while a host of familiar British faces (Ben Daniels, Dexter Fletcher, Rosamund Pike) also get the opportunity to practise their American accents. Director Andrzej Bartkowiak (Cradle 2 the Grave) manages to resist the joy-stick approach to direction until right to the end - although that will probably be regarded as a negative by fans of the game.

Summary

A squad of specially trained soldiers is sent in to investigate after all communication with a scientific research station on Mars ceases - but none of them is prepared for the hordes of monsters that have overrun the planet. Sci-fi thriller based on the video game, starring Dwayne Johnson, Karl Urban, Rosamund Pike, Dexter Fletcher and Ben Daniels.
