An off-duty cop's benevolence leads him into deadly trouble in this mediocre crime thriller that's based on Dashiell Hammett's short story The House on Turk Street (the film's original title). Samuel L Jackson stars as the cello-playing detective kidnapped by bank robbers after he stumbles on their lair while hunting for a friend's missing daughter. Though the film is attractively cast, with Milla Jovovich's manipulative femme fatale a particular treat, their talents are undermined by an increasingly preposterous script and clumsy direction from Bob Rafelson (The Postman Always Rings Twice, Five Easy Pieces). Jackson's original mission is quickly forgotten, replaced by unrealistic events that never lose a TV-drama feel. As the clichéd characters reach meltdown, so does the plot, resulting in a disappointingly convenient climax that belies Rafelson's illustrious past.

A police officer stumbles on a gang of thieves, and is held hostage while the criminals decide his fate. His spirits are boosted when he forms an emotional bond with the leader's girlfriend - but her duplicitous nature threatens his slender hope of being freed. Thriller, starring Samuel L Jackson, Milla Jovovich, Stellan Skarsgard and Doug Hutchinson.
