Review

Our Score
This fantasy drama from director Phil Alden Robinson is a delightful blend of the blind-fate story and the more fanciful feel-good corn of Frank Capra. Kevin Costner, as an Iowa farmer, is the epitome of dignified determination as he accedes to a ghostly voice and turns the field on which his family depends for its livelihood into a baseball pitch. The underestimated Amy Madigan gives a good account of herself as his trusting wife, while Ray Liotta, Burt Lancaster and Frank Whaley represent the spirit world with distinction. It was also Lancaster's last cinema film and is a poignant swan song for a true Hollywood great.

Summary

A farmer hears a mysterious voice inspiring him to mark out a baseball diamond in a cornfield - which, to his surprise, is visited by the ghost of the star player of the 1919 Chicago White Sox team, whose career was cut short by scandal. It later dawns on him the pitch has a greater purpose - to give people who have sacrificed important parts of their lives a second chance. Fantasy, starring Kevin Costner, Ray Liotta, Burt Lancaster and James Earl Jones.
