Michael York and Jenny Agutter star in this tale adapted by David Zelag Goodman from the novel by William F Nolan and George Clayton Johnson that earnestly depicts a society that dooms those over the age of 30 to the myth of "renewal". Making this 20 years after his Around the World in 80 Days, director Michael Anderson takes almost as long to make his point here, but puts on a real spurt when the runners head for the outside. Dale Hennesy and Robert De Vestel's imaginative designs were Oscar-nominated and provide some compensation for the rather cumbersome plot.

Plot Summary

Science-fiction thriller starring Michael York and Jenny Agutter. In the 23rd century, people live under vast domes in a world with no disease, hunger or greed. But nobody is allowed to live past 30 without going through a ritual called "renewal", where only a few survive.
