Our Score
Following School for Scoundrels and Bad Santa, Billy Bob Thornton provides another exercise in snarling comic villainy. Years after suffering through gym class with Thornton's malevolent PE teacher Mr Woodcock, John Farley (Seann William Scott) has overcome his chubby child misery with a bestselling self-help book about getting over one's past. But when Farley returns home to receive a prestigious award, he discovers that his mum (Susan Sarandon, in a thankless role) is now dating the bullying educator. Predictably, Farley then engages in a less-than-hilarious battle of wits with his childhood nemesis. Thornton can play this kind of role in his sleep, and that's pretty much what he does here, as the rest of the overly accomplished cast simply mark time. High points include flashbacks to Thornton's sadistic gym sessions and Amy Poehler as Farley's liquor-soaked, hard-nosed publicist. Low points are everything else in this formulaic comedy.

The successful author of a self-help book has managed to put the painful memories of being bullied by his PE teacher as a chubby youngster behind him. However, when he returns to his home town to accept a prestigious award, the writer is horrified to discover his mother is planning to marry his childhood tormentor. Comedy, starring Billy Bob Thornton, Seann William Scott and Susan Sarandon.
