The committed playing of the cast takes some of the mawkishness out of this TV-movie drama. The story starts slowly, as LA lawyer Jason London struggles to cope with his finances and commitment-craving girlfriend, Meredith Salenger. But once he heads into the California backwoods to ease his mother's concerns about his eccentric grandfather, things begin to perk up. Ed Asner has a bit of fun as the old-timer who has rejected consumer society and now lives a naturist existence in the wilds. Unfortunately, director Stephen Bridgewater dilutes this entertaining situation by having London fall for single mother Missy Crider before manufacturing a sentimental showdown with Salenger and her yuppie buddies.
