Ever since swapping wrestling for acting, The Rock (aka Dwayne Johnson) has carved a niche for himself as a personable leading man in films like Welcome to the Jungle. This Disney family comedy proves once again that he's more than just a moonlighting muscleman as he throws himself into scenes of child-friendly slapstick with surprising gusto. Johnson plays pro footballer Joe Kingman, a quarterback with the (fictional) Boston Rebels whose multimillion-dollar bachelor life is upended by the unexpected arrival of eight-year-old Peyton (Madison Pettis), the daughter he never knew he had. Juggling his new responsibilities delivers the usual life lessons, although the real draw lies in seeing Johnson's light comic touch put to superb use in high jinks involving water pistols, Swan Lake ballet recitals and a pet bulldog in a tutu. The supporting cast includes Morris Chestnut and Kyra Sedgwick, whose obvious enjoyment adds an unexpected degree of infectious enthusiasm.
