Our Score
After the disaster that was Batman and Robin, Joel Schumacher made some amends with this sinister, occasionally disturbing thriller. Set against the dark side of the sex industry, the tale has Nicolas Cage as a private detective who is hired by an elderly widow to find out whether a film she discovered among her late husband's belongings is actually a snuff movie. The sceptical Cage finds himself drawn into a nightmarish world where his only guide is streetwise punk Joaquin Phoenix. Cage is as charismatic as ever and he's well supported by Phoenix, James Gandolfini and Peter Stormare. Schumacher and Se7en scriptwriter Andrew Kevin Walker paint a lurid portrait of the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles, but the film is too strident for its own good and unravels badly at the end.

Summary

A surveillance expert is dragged into a seedy world of murder and deception when hired to investigate a suspicious movie found among the possessions of a dead man. The film seems to contain scenes of a real-life killing - but appearances can be deceptive. Thriller, starring Nicolas Cage, Joaquin Phoenix, James Gandolfini and Peter Stormare.
