Our Score
Nicolas Cage gives one of the best performances of his career in this borderline insane film that at one time was labelled a remake of Abel Ferrara's 1992 Bad Lieutenant. Cage plays Lieutenant Terence McDonagh, a police officer in post-Katrina New Orleans who develops a drug problem after picking up a back injury. But while supposedly investigating a gang murder, the demands of his drug habit, massive gambling debt, alcoholic father and hooker girlfriend (Eva Mendes) begin to take their toll on his increasingly frayed existence. Director Werner Herzog, here confirming his position as one of cinema's most interesting and unpredictable directors, claims never to have seen or even heard of Ferrara's tortured-cop drama. That's not difficult to believe, as his picture is certainly a livelier, more human and less portentous take on the theme of one man's journey into a kind of personal hell. It's certainly a lot funnier, too.
