Detective "Dirty" Harry Callahan's shoot-first-ask-questions-later modus operandi comes back to haunt him in this watchable first sequel to the seminal 1971 thriller. As usual, Clint Eastwood's San Francisco cop is meting out justice in his own inimitable fashion - trusty .44 Magnum in hand - and railing at his milksop superiors, until the execution of assorted bad guys puts Harry's no-nonsense methods, and indeed Harry himself, in the spotlight. Eastwood oozes laconic cool and confirms his superstar status, even if the storyline here is more brutally violent and fails to explore the moral complexity of the original - Ted Post is no Don Siegel when it comes to direction. Nevertheless, the climactic chase and showdown on board a deserted aircraft carrier is gripping, and it's intriguing to see future TV stars like David Soul (Starsky and Hutch) and Robert Urich (Spenser for Hire) cut their teeth playing rookie motorcycle cops.
