Carl Franklin has proved himself adept at modern film noir with One False Move and Devil in a Blue Dress. But even though this Florida thriller reunites him with his Blue Dress star, Denzel Washington, first-time screenwriter Dave Collard's laboured exposition saps any suspense from an already predictable premise. It's feasible that Washington's small-town cop would be having an affair with married old flame Sanaa Lathan, but it's harder to accept that he would either thieve a vast sum of confiscated cash to pay for emergency medical care or that he would be able to stay ahead of estranged wife (and fellow detective) Eva Mendes's investigation with such ease. Polished perhaps, but highly superficial.
