Our Score
Taking the baton from the far superior Babe, this comedy adventure mixes live action, animatronics and computer-generated animation to create a covert struggle for world domination between cats and dogs. It's a nice concept - that our pets are engaged in espionage and subterfuge (and that they talk behind our backs) - but messy execution and a weak script serve to undermine any potential charm. The problem lies in the uneasy switch from real animal actors - the cute central beagle Lou (voiced by Tobey Maguire), various innocent looking cats - to all-too-obvious puppets. For instance, feline villain Mr Tinkles (Sean Hayes) is almost all animatronic and thus jars horribly with sidekick Calico (Jon Lovitz), a flesh-and-blood moggy with animated facial features. In the end, there's too much going on technically and not enough going on narratively. And if you're a "cat person" you should stay away from what is blatant pro-dog propaganda, in any case.
