The Mentalist is a funny old thing. When you think it’s just a likeable, quirky but deeply formulaic cop show, it delivers a completely unexpected emotional punch. Here it comes in some touching final scenes.
This story is typically murky and silly; a hedge fund manager is found dead with his throat slit. Then his body is stolen on the way to the mortuary. The man’s family, including his mother-in-law (Frances Conroy, the mother in Six Feet Under), are hiding something very big, according to Patrick Jane (Simon Baker).
It’s a featherlight tale, but there are some good moments with the show’s best character, that deadpan straight-arrow detective, Cho.
