This series really ought to have grown tired by now, but the formula still manages to zing along. A new run kicks off with the comic tale of the First In Last Out, a roadside pub and B&B in Winchester. The place’s decor is brilliantly grim: the breakfast room has, I promise you, the ugliest grey chairs you’ll ever set eyes on and the bedrooms include wonderfully random bric-a-brac.
But that’s not what upsets Alex Pollizzi. It’s the sheer scale of the furry mould in the communal shower that defeats her. And so it is that the “Filo” (as it is known) becomes the first hotel in the series she has ever refused to stay the night in.
It’s fun to watch Alex’s subsequent clashes with lumpen owner John, whose bachelorish approach to cleanliness has her railing at him like an exasperated mum berating a teenage son. And then he starts trying to flirt.

About this programme

1/8. Alex Polizzi visits the First in Last Out, a 17th-century B&B with a pub in Winchester, Hampshire, which has received a number of negative reviews. She refuses to sleep there after seeing an unpleasant shower room, tries to help owner Jon Sweeney realise how inexpensive accommodation should not mean low quality, and demonstrates the importance of cleaning.
