Comic Relief: Through Hell and High Water

Radio Times

Here’s a programme that reminds us of Comic Relief’s more important purpose: making celebrities suffer. Among those going through hell on a whitewater trip down the Zambezi are Jack Dee, Dara O Briain and Spice Girl Melanie Chisholm.

In between near-death experiences they have time to pause and remind us of the other important purpose involved — helping children in rural Africa. But the producers make sure the stars have a properly rough time of it, too. Dara, for one, must have been longing for the more sedate pleasures of Three Men in a Boat. And watching Waterloo Road actress Chelsee “Can I go now, I’m bored” Healey and Mel C bemoaning the “mank” of the African bush is priceless. But the big surprise is Jack Dee: the new Ray Mears.

About this programme

Documentary following six famous faces as they take on arguably the toughest Comic Relief challenge to date, embarking on an arduous 110km journey down Africa's mighty Zambezi River. Comedians Jack Dee and Dara O Briain, singer Mel C, actress Chelsee Healey, Radio 1 DJ Greg James and world champion triple-jumper Phillips Idowu are the celebrities braving raging rapids, hippos and snakes in a bid to raise £1million to send poor children in Zambia to school. But the danger becomes all too real when two of the party go missing after their canoe overturns in crocodile-infested waters.
