Prince Charles is a big fan of Countryfile, as is his wife Camilla. He admits so in this 25th anniversary edition. So fond is he of the programme that he agreed to be guest editor, a coup for them and a bit of a PR triumph for him.
This is Charles as we rarely see him; relaxed on his home turf at Highgrove engaging in playful banter with the Countryfile presenters, while using the opportunity to highlight rural issues that concern him most.
The sight of him in frayed jacket helping create a new hawthorn hedge underlines his passion for farming the right way, but there are glimpses of the clown prince as well. His end-of-programme sign off — “It’s goodbye from them, and it’s goodbye from me” — could catch on!
About this programme
The team visits Prince Charles's Gloucestershire farm for a special edition of the rural magazine. Julia Bradbury finds out about HRH's passion for the countryside, Matt Baker and Adam Henson ask the prince about his love of organic farming and John Craven lends a hand with some hedge-laying on the estate. There is also a report on a south London comprehensive where pupils are learning to grow and cook their own food, and Paralympian Hannah Cockroft explores how accessible the countryside is for the disabled.
