There’s something dangerous as well as magical about the sea, but if anyone can make it seem safe and friendly it’s Old Jack, Salty the dog and one of their preposterous ocean-going tales. Today, Miss Bowline-Hitch is returning all the things she’s borrowed – until she realises she’s lost her purse. Her troubles remind Jack of a story about Pearl the mermaid losing something special.
