You can’t watch these programmes and not admire Hugh Fearnley-Whittingtall’s efforts to save our seas. But discovering just how seafood reaches our plates leaves you knowing things you wish you didn’t. It would be nice to enjoy supermarket prawns without thinking too hard about how they are farmed on the other side of the world, for example, but Hugh won’t let us off that hook.

He travels to Thailand, the biggest supplier of farmed king prawns to the UK, and follows the supply chain, seeing how local fish stocks are depleted to create fishmeal to feed hungry prawns.

There’s better news closer to home, as Hugh sees the recovery of the seabed in a Marine Protected Area off the coast near River Cottage. It’s hard not to see these reserves as a win all-round: fish stocks recover so fishermen benefit, too. But is the Government watering down plans for more? Hugh goes into battle.

He observes the recovery of the seabed taking place in a Marine Protected Area in Lyme Bay, but shares his concerns that government plans for a network of MPAs around the coast are being diluted.
