The last series ended, as usual, with raging melodrama and a flurry of cliffhangers including one big one: crime lab boss DB Russell (Ted Danson) learnt his own granddaughter had been kidnapped. Yes, the writers are raising the emotional stakes, though Danson tries his best to keep it real.

The abduction is tied up with dastardly undersheriff McKeen and his ring of corrupt cops, which means that Russell doesn’t know who he can trust and starts going nuts, shouting at everyone even when they’re trying to help.

Meanwhile, Finn is flirting with someone very dangerous and Nick is drunk – has he really quit?
