The pleasantly tricksy Sherlock Holmes-lite returns after a break. Now and then The Mentalist gets very dark indeed but mostly it’s predictable and silly and trite almost to the point of weightlessness. But who cares? Just because the regular characters move on pre-ordained paths doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy them repeating their patterns – in that respect it’s more like a sitcom.

Occasionally it gets proper laughs, too, as here when straight-arrow (and not famously sharp) cop Wayne Rigsby has to pose undercover as a shrewd dealer in high-value plant seeds. And stick around for the cute coda involving pouty boss Lisbon and a hammer. The case for the California Bureau of Investigation involves a murdered botanist who was breeding super-marijuana. Meanwhile, Cho bumps into an old friend.

About this programme

10/22. Lisbon and Jane are called to a rock-climbing wall at a gym, where the dead body of Jeremy Reese is dangling in mid-air. They discover that the victim was a botanist working on a new strain of marijuana resistant to fungal infection. Some of the seeds had recently gone missing and Reese's bank statements show large deposits from a company registered in the Cayman Islands. Had he been trying to sell commercial secrets to a tobacco firm? Simon Baker stars.
