Identical twins Meg and Mave (both played by the estimable Monica Dolan) are dourly aggressive market traders married, according to local folklore, to the same man. But one of them is pregnant and the other, a fiercely over-protective herbalist, is determined that her sibling will not end up in the clutches of the Nonnatus House midwives. Good luck with that.
Actually, things are fraught at the nunnery now that Chummy has taken a six-month leave of absence. The staff number drops further when Jenny is sent at short notice on secondment to the London Hospital, where she wears a uniform with outrageously puffed sleeves designed by Norman Hartnell and is bullied by an unpleasant surgeon (Anthony Calf, the boss in New Tricks). There are some heart-stopping moments, but the best bits belong to sweet Sister Bernadette (Laura Main) as she quietly pines for love.
About this programme
3/8. Jenny is seconded to a short-staffed hospital in London, but grows increasingly reluctant to carry out her duties when she finds out she is working under intimidating surgeon Mr Tracey. Back in Poplar, the midwives are introduced to newcomer Jane and outspoken twins Meg and Mave Carter. The sisters are identical in every way, except one of them is now pregnant - forcing them to come to terms with the impact a baby will have on them. Jessica Raine and Bryony Hannah star.
