About this programme
2/3. Dan Snow heads for 18th-century Paris to discover how the insanitary living conditions endured by its poorest residents helped bring about the French Revolution. He visits a perfumer to re-create some of the city's unsavoury smells, and finds out what happened to the thousands of bodies that overflowed from cemeteries during the Terror of 1793. He also tries his hand at tanning leather the traditional way - using dog faeces and urine.
