Devotees of Stephen Poliakoff will recognise recurring elements from his previous works: the power of photographs, the magnetism of a big, old building, a fascination with British royalty and the enigma of a wealthy man who likes to party. The latter here is the mysterious and possibly unwholesome Masterson (John Goodman). He’s drawn the Louis Lester band into his orbit, but success is not coming fast enough for bandleader Louis (Chiwetel Ejiofor).
Still, there’s a stroke of luck when they are asked to play at the funeral of the estate manager of a strange, very rich woman (Jacqueline Bisset). It turns out she’s a big jazz fan.
About this programme
2/5. Louis is introduced to wealthy recluse Lady Lavinia Cremone, who arranges for the band to play in front of Prince George and invites a producer from the BBC and a record company executive. Singer Jessie is flattered when she attracts the attention of aristocrat Julian Luscombe, who takes her out for a spin in his new car and promises to introduce her to a Hollywood film producer. Starring Jacqueline Bisset, Tom Hughes and Angel Coulby.
