World Without End

Series 1 - Episode 4

It’s seven years after last week’s chapter of this medieval saga. Caris is now well established as a nun at the convent, forswearing the ways of men, though still growing a little flustered as she reads a letter from her sometime lover Merthin in Florence.

There, a great pestilence is killing the populace, and you get the feeling it won’t be long before the plague washes up in Kingsbridge, too.

But oddly, Kingsbridge is almost an afterthought this week: there’s some clerical canoodling (a running theme) but most of the action unfolds elsewhere, as we follow King Edward’s attempts to escape from a military pickle in France. An unlikely encounter with Caris makes all the difference.

About this programme

4/6. Almost 10 years have passed and Edward III is desperate to find a way for his army to cross the River Somme, otherwise they will remain trapped and under siege in France. Mother Cecilia announces she has been left money that will enable her to fund the hospital, but Godwyn gets his hands on the windfall and keeps it - leading to Caris being sent to petition the king.
