Call the Midwife

Series 2 - Episode 2

Radio Times
Review by:
Alison Graham

A pall of sadness hangs over Nonnatus House after nurse Cynthia Miller (Bryony Hannah) has a harrowing experience in one of those grim Poplar tenements.

Poor Cynthia battles a swirl of guilt and loss, and her friends become increasingly worried about her state of mind. It’s a genuinely upsetting story with some difficult scenes – as we learnt with the Christmas special, when Call the Midwife becomes dark, all light really does drain
from the world.

Meanwhile, Chummy (Miranda Hart) is making plans, as is her nice policeman husband Peter (Ben Caplan), who decides he must lose weight and get fit, so he goes to Nonnatus House’sjolly, portly odd-job man Fred, of all people. It’s a daft sub-plot, but believe me, you’ll need a bit of
a lift, even if it’s only from some silly comedy.
