A snooty academic has the temerity to refer to Lewis’s “simple questions” and “dumb open face” and Lewis, bless him, doesn’t leap to his own defence. If only DCI Morse was still around, he’d never put up with such cheek.
In the concluding part of a story that started last week, Lewis and Hathaway (still stilted by a neck brace after a car accident) are hunting the killer of a fake medium and his colleague, a young woman researcher. Lewis even makes a trip to some stables in search of the murder weapon, where he’s offered a ride on an “old plodder”. The irony of the phrase is not lost on him: “Never underestimate a plodder.” As if we would.
About this programme
2/6. Part two of two. With Oxford's clairvoyance community in turmoil following the deaths of the research fellows, the direction of Lewis's investigation shifts when the two chief suspects provide seemingly unshakeable alibis. A senior colleague's attitude doesn't help matters - but then Hathaway makes a suggestion that helps pave the way to a solution.
