Art critic Andrew Graham-Dixon and chef Giorgio Locatelli begin another civilised Italian amble to feast on the best food and finest sights. After pottering around Sicily in their last series, the pair start a three-part journey in Bologna at the heart of one of Italy’s most abundant regions.

They rhapsodise about the city’s university, the oldest in the world, and the booming traditional shops and art institutions. There are lunch stops en route and, after heading for Emilia, Giorgio introduces his British pal to the delights of languid fishing with big nets. But perhaps the real treats are reserved for the end, when in Modena the boys enjoy the twin delights of balsamic vinegar and Ferraris.

About this programme

1/3. Andrew Graham-Dixon and Giorgio Locatelli go on a tour of the country, beginning in Emilia-Romagna - one of the richest and most fertile regions in Italy. The pair start in Bologna, visiting the oldest university in the world, the still-thriving traditional shops and the town's art institutions. They see the legacy of the House of Este dynasty in Ferrara and then head to Modena, home of a famous balsamic vinegar and Ferrari cars. In Parma, Giorgio admires an original manuscript of a best-selling cook book first published in 1891, while Andrew admires an innovative fresco in the cathedral dome.
