Sea City

Series 1 - Episode 1

Radio Times
Review by:

According to Sea City’s excitable cinema-travelogue narration, the port of Southampton is a “gateway to the world!”; it is “fighting to keep the nation afloat!”; it’s the “cruise capital of the UK!” This old-fashioned observational series, so reminiscent of its 1990s cousin Airport, roams the terminal for stories.

It’s the P&O cruise line’s 175th anniversary and there’s a review of its seven-strong fleet by the Princess Royal. But will the gigantic birthday cake arrive in one piece after it’s checked by security? And over at a rain-swept temporary check-in terminal and car park, passengers are furious at being stuck in traffic queues.

About this programme

1/3. Behind the scenes at the Port of Southampton, as cruise company P&O gathers its entire fleet of seven ships for a review by Princess Anne, which proves a testing time for the staff. Cameras also record the work of the Rev Roger Stone, who looks after seafarers' welfare, and one of the few women stevedores as she carries out the job of loading luxury cars.
