Ryan Murphy (of Glee fame) has crafted another winning, warm-hearted comedy. He and co-writer Ali Adler’s story of two gay men (Justin Bartha and Andrew Rannells) who invite the surrogate mother (Georgia King) carrying their IVF baby to live with them, along with her nine-year-old daughter and cantankerous grandmother (Ellen Barkin), mixes sentimentality with just the right amount of sarcasm to stop it slipping into the saccharine.

It may be wildly derivative (compare it with Modern Family and Murphy’s own Glee) but the cast all have good chemistry and are largely likeable, though you may gasp when the excellent Barkin unleashes a torrent of bigoted views.
