Officer Tang is angry when her husband serves her with divorce papers, the catalyst for what turns out to be a very bad day indeed. By the end, Tang (Lucy Liu) and her partner Cooper (Michael Cudlitz) are glaring at one another across a vast emotional distance. And another duo on the beat has hit a rocky patch. After Ben Sherman wrongly doubted Sammy’s integrity, there’s ice between them. This is the kind of thing that Southland does so well; it pierces these friendships that aren’t just a fount of banter – they can be life-savers, too. As they’re fond of saying, “I’m here to watch your back, partner.”
