Antiques Roadshow

Series 35 - 12. Fountains Abbey 1

Radio Times

Jane Rackham

It’s all about the stories this week. There are some wonderful items brought in to Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire, yet it’s not the valuations but their history that’s most interesting. One woman gives a brilliant account of how she got an autographed photo of the Beatles from John Lennon’s Aunt Mimi, while a dentist describes how his collection of Inuit soapstone carvings was accumulated because he took them in payment for performing extractions.

Even glass expert Andy McConnell gets in on the act, regaling one lady with a lively tale of how the celebrated maker of the piece of Swedish glass she’s brought in refused to talk to him.

About this programme

12/25. Fiona Bruce and the team travel to Fountains Abbey near Ripon in North Yorkshire, where members of the public bring along their treasured antiques and collectibles to hear their stories and find out their worth. Items include a set of Inuit carvings given to the owner as payment for dental treatment in the Arctic, a 17th-century gold ring that narrowly escaped being melted down for scrap value, and a Viennese glass that acts as a poignant reminder of a grandfather who died in a concentration camp.
