Restless

Series 1 - Episode 2

Radio Times

Alison Graham

Louche spy-master Lucas Romer (Rufus Sewell) wants plucky Eva Delectorskaya (Hayley Atwell) to cosy up to an influential adviser to President Roosevelt as Britain tries to persuade America to enter the war. And he’s not just talking about a cocktail and a nice dinner. Eva is expected to do what a girl has to do. “Be extra-friendly. You have to think of it as a job,” Romer tells the woman who is supposed to be his girlfriend.

After a great start yesterday, the concluding episode of this lush adaptation of William Boyd’s bestseller suffers a few longueurs, notably a perplexing and seemingly endless trip for Eva to New Mexico. But bear with it as the two parallel stories — Eva during the war and Eva in 1970s England when she’s called Sally — slowly intertwine. Sally (Charlotte Rampling) is convinced someone wants her killed and sets up her own daughter Ruth (Michelle Dockery) to find out who.

About this programme

2/2. Eva's 1941 mission to the US, where she seduced a Washington DC official attached to President Roosevelt's office before surviving an attempt on her life in New Mexico, could hold the key to her present difficulties. Ruth poses as a journalist to meet Lord Romer, and although his suspicions are aroused, he appears unaware when Eva follows him to his Chelsea house. Conclusion of the two-part dramatisation of William Boyd's acclaimed espionage thriller, starring Hayley Atwell and Rufus Sewell, with Michael Gambon, Michelle Dockery and Charlotte Rampling.
