“Plácido stands for a holistic and almost divine concept where acting and musicality and singing beautifully [combine] in one entity,” raves Swedish soprano Nina Stemme in the interval of this gala from the Royal Opera House. “I’m not sure we’ll ever have anyone like him again.” His fans may already have reached a similar conclusion.
A wonderful line-up of international opera stars, some new to Covent Garden, take to the stage to perform arias in his honour and duet with 71-year-old Domingo himself. Antonio Pappano conducts, and ever-demure Katie Derham is on hand to name that tune and singer.
