The pioneering work of producer Joe Meek is celebrated by Tom Robinson. The futuristic space sounds he used were pioneering in the 1960s and his hit Telstar with the Tornadoes was the first song by a British group to top the singles chart in the United States.

Tragic, then, that his talents were accompanied by the mental health problems that led to his suicide.

About this programme

Tom Robinson profiles the pioneering Sixties record producer responsible for introducing futuristic sounds into the textures of modern pop. Despite having no musical training, he developed the now familiar techniques of reverb and compression and gave America its first number one single by a British band with Telstar by the Tornadoes. Wildly eccentric and secretive, he led a chaotic personal life which ended in tragedy. First broadcast in 2007.
