Judge Wall Hatfield (Powers Boothe) pays a call on his brother “Devil” Anse (Kevin Costner). He plans to turn himself in to the Kentucky authorities: “All this damn bloodshed and killing’s gotta stop,” he rumbles, a sentiment that might have been more use about a decade earlier, before the flower of two families got slaughtered.
Not that Anse takes any notice, promptly setting off with the biggest posse yet and colliding with a McCoy posse to fight the chaotic Battle of Grapevine, where even Anse begins to grasp the folly of it all. There are moving moments as the saga concludes, but you might be well advised to exit before the saccharine end captions.
