We take it for granted, but the production design on this series is staggering. Look at the New York gentlemen’s club where Nucky does a kind of Dragons’ Den pitch to gruff plutocrat Andrew Mellon. Or there’s Gillian’s high-ceilinged brothel with its peeling wallpaper. In one scene tonight an entire Scandinavian street party is re-created for a single shot — the budgets must be astronomical.
But hang on, we don’t watch for the sets! We watch for the lurching melodrama, and that has been in short supply lately. Not tonight. Tonight, it all kicks off beautifully.
About this programme
8/12. With help from Gaston Means, Nucky pays an unscheduled visit to treasury secretary Andrew Mellon and puts a business proposal to him. Later, he shops for a birthday pony and is unhappy to hear that his mistress Billie aims to make the transition from stage to screen. In Chicago, Van Alden attends a meeting with Al Capone and Johnny Torrio and later considers Sigrid's case for staying in town rather than spending a life on the run.
