Avril and Ron Head are an exceptional couple. They have three birth children, two adopted sons and two severely disabled children placed permanently in their foster care. And then there are the other 131 children, many with physical, learning or behavioural problems, who have passed through their care.
Hardeep Singh Kohli begins his new series, in which he cooks lunch for different people each week, at the Heads’ large house. The property might be generously sized but the kitchen is tiny. How does that work, he asks. Practicality rules and a small kitchen means Ron and Avril can reach everything from one fixed point.
Hardeep expresses sincere admiration for the work they do and horror at the prejudice they have faced from ignorant members of the public. He also cooks them up a mighty fine three-course meal.
