It’s been dubbed “the Spanish Downton” and has all the credentials: a stunning setting, elegant aristocrats and an abundance of servants who don’t know their place. The difference is that it’s about a luxury hotel with a devious widow at the helm. And if Julian Fellowes’s plotting occasionally seems a little far-fetched, Grand Hotel’s double-dealing will make your head spin.
In this bumper first episode, set in 1905, the dashing Julio gets a job as a waiter to investigate another servant’s disappearance, and also finds time to bat his eyelashes at a comely heiress. Deliciously moreish if you can overlook the melodrama.
