Union J’s shock appearance in the sing-off when Rylan and Christopher Maloney had sailed through every week just goes to prove that there’s no such thing as a certainty in this show.

Up to that moment, the media (although not RT, I’d like to point out) had been full of predictions that Union J, Jahmene Douglas, Ella Henderson and James Arthur were the main contenders to make it all the way to the final.

So no prophecies about which of the remaining eight acts will make it through to perform another week, although it’s a safe bet that there’ll be the usual, getting-a-bit-tedious-now shenanigans from the four judges.

About this programme

17/21. Last week, Kye Sones got the chop following a sing-off against Rylan Clark, and it was announced that Lucy Spraggan would not return to the competition. Now, the dream of a record deal, a possible Christmas number one and a celebrity lifestyle comes a little closer for the seven remaining acts as they cover classic British pop and rock tracks, battling to win support from the judges and viewers. With the final just four weeks away, the pressure to deliver note-perfect performances has never been higher, and one dodgy dance move or poor song choice will leave the acts in the firing line as they face Gary Barlow, Nicole Scherzinger, Tulisa and Louis Walsh. Plus, X Factor graduates One Direction perform. Dermot O'Leary hosts.
